Q&A: What’s the best method for house training a puppy?
Question by Anonymous: What’s the best method for house training a puppy?
My labrador puppy is only 3 months old, but house training is a real pain, hitting it with a fire poker and rubbing its face in its business isn’t working, any suggestions?
Right, today I gave it a massive belt with the poker, and it seems to have stopped, although its a bit more aggresive now.

try the bell method, you will need a bell on a long string and have it tied to a doorknob (one that ur puppy will always go out of to go potty)
When its potty time say potty time to your puppy
ring the bell put him outside and WATCH him go potty and if he lays down stand him back up.
When he goes praise him like he’ll and do the same every 2 hours
soon you will find your dog ringing the bell too.
DO NOT RUB OR HIT UR DOG U R MAKING IT WORSe!!!!!!

I got our black lab at the age of 8 weeks and potty training was REAL fun I know. However I had him fully potty trained within a week. What I did was I did not smack him or rub his nose in it I would make him go out often even if it has only been 20 mins. and after he would go potty outside I would reward him with a treat and tell him he was a good boy. When he would go in the house I would pick him up right in the middle of him peeing and bring him out to the grass. Also when you scold him stick to one word like “No” or “Bad”. I would also ask all the time, do you have to go potty? and then he caught on that meant go outside. He is now 11 months old and to this day when I ask him that he will go to the sliding glass door to go out. Remember that puppies go pee A LOT so just be patient that’s the biggest thing. Hope this helps a little good luck!!!
kennel training works really well. if you have to leave for while a kennel is good because they will try hard not to pee when they have to stay there next to it. it is also best to limit their water before kenneling them. it is pretty easy to teach the dog to love the kennel, start with treats to lure them into the kennel rather than shoving them in. always say kennel when getting the dog into the kennel, eventually after the dog is comfortable going in, give the treat after the dog is already in the kennel. eventually the dog will go in on it’s own at the word “kennel.” my dog goes into his kennel now whether i tell him to or not, and if he is scared or tired, he likes to sit in his kennel for comfort. just make sure to let the dog outside as soon as you take him out of the kennel.
It is NOT too early! Your best bet to start is to place the pee pads or paper in several places in the house. It would also be good for you to clean up some urine from the puppy with the pee pad – because the puppy will smell its own scent on the pads, and pee on them again. It is especially good if you are keeping the puppy enclosed in a small area. That way it gets use to using the pad all the time.
You see puppies have such tiny bladders that they cannot hold it that long. So, you can’t be hard on them and get so upset, they are growing and getting stronger every day.
Also with the pads you can keep moving them closer and closer to the backyard door, so they will learn which direction they will be going when they do use it outside all the time.
I had 3 litters of puppies and even though I knew they were going to new homes, I started the training when they were about 2 months old.
